American Gardens
a hidden gem of Opatija horticulture
A short walk from the center takes you to a hidden gem of Opatija’s horticultural heritage. Once called the Gardens of Semiramis, they are now known as the American Gardens. They were created in the first half of the 20th century by Hungarian adventurer and paprika merchant Mihaly Kuczor, who made a fortune in America. Together with his wife Hilda von Hortenau, he designed the gardens in terraces with carefully selected vegetation intended for relaxation of body and mind. From this park filled with roses, eucalyptus, magnolias, vineyards, and thoughtfully integrated architectural elements, there is a beautiful view of Kvarner Bay.
