Church of the Annunciation
an impressive neo-Romanesque church
As Opatija grew, there was a need for a large central church. Thus, the impressive Church of the Annunciation was built, a neo-Romanesque structure with a striking green dome beautifully integrated into the surrounding greenery. Known locally as “Vela crekva” or “German church,” it is one of the most recognizable parts of Opatija’s skyline. Construction began under the Bishop of Trieste, Franjo Nagl, was delayed by World War I, and later continued by Italians, but it was never fully completed. A peaceful road leads to it, continuing further toward the picturesque American Gardens.
