Opatija’s favorable location made it a popular getaway for Central European elites long ago. Situated in the Kvarner Bay, where the Mediterranean Sea reaches deepest into the European continent, it has been excellently connected to European metropolises since the 19th century. It is easy to visit at any time of the year and by any means of transport.
By car, it takes only a few hours from all major regional centers, and from Opatija you can reach all major cities of Central and Southeastern Europe in less than five hours. Traveling by air is also simple—you can reach Opatija via several international airports (Zagreb, Ljubljana, Trieste, Venice, Rijeka, Pula), from which the town is less than two hours away.
