Opatija Market
the lively center of local life
One of the best places to experience local life is the market. It is a place of laughter, encounters, bargaining, and a strong sense of community. The center of local life in Opatija is its market, known as “mrkat.” Built in 1898 as tourism expanded and the previous market space became insufficient, it was complemented with a fish market in 1907. Opatija combines sea and mountain freshness, floral and forest life, so it is no surprise that the market offers an abundance of fresh, local products—from juicy fruits and vegetables to sweet honey, salty cheese, and freshly caught Adriatic fish.
