Opatija's small harbour

The late 19th century. Noble ladies in elegant dresses with parasols descend toward the sea from their hotels. “Barke faren,” calls out a charming boatman in a wooden boat. This is the story of the early days of Opatija’s oldest harbour— portić. Traditional wooden boats gradually grew larger to carry more passengers and cargo, offering romantic rides along the beautiful Opatija coast. Even today, you can take a ride with a boatman or join a similar excursion on tourist boats.
