About the Event

You may love your daily routine and the small rituals that keep you grounded. And yet, sometimes you wish to see yourself in a completely different role. In Opatija, carnival time is dedicated to endless, joyful transformations! During Carnival, masked revelers take over the city, filling it with a free spirit, laughter, and excitement.

Fun for all

Everywhere you look — little fairies, superheroes, princesses, wizards… and just beyond them, birds, Dalmatians, chefs, even umbrellas! These are the youngest participants of the most cheerful event — the Children’s Carnival Parade. From the market hall to Slatina, accompanied by cheering crowds and music, as many as 3,000 children parade in carefully crafted, original costumes. The celebration continues afterward with entertainers and sweet treats — especially the irresistible carnival donuts.

The craziest race in town

Carnival always has its quirky side — and in Opatija, that’s the famous Balinjerada, the craziest race in the world. It may not be faster than Formula 1, but it’s certainly more unique: vehicles can look like a bumblebee, a horse, or even an entire Hawaiian bar! The more imaginative, the better — the only rule is that they must run on ball bearings (balinjere).
If you feel a rush of adrenaline, you can join in yourself! Hop onto a cart, scooter, or homemade vehicle and become part of the fun and inventive engineering. The enthusiastic crowd will cheer you on the whole way.

Even more creative “sports”

The creativity doesn’t stop there. Balinjerada is followed by Kukalka — a seaside version of the traditional Sinjska Alka. In this adaptation, brave participants — known as kukali — run through the shallow sea aiming to hit a metal ring.
On horses, you ask? No — on “seahorses”! These spirited participants are also known for starting each new year with a refreshing swim in the sea.

Music and dancing in masks

Beyond their incredible costumes, the people of Opatija will impress you with their musical talents. One highlight is the masked a cappella marathon, where performers humorously imitate carnival tunes with creative choreography.
The festivities conclude with music and dancing at the traditional masked ball, “Maškarani tanac pul Barića.”
Among the joyful masked citizens of Opatija, you can freely shine in all your versions. With adrenaline, great music, and unforgettable costumes, an amazing time is guaranteed.
