About the Event

Every walk through Opatija is a walk through its rich and layered history. In the arboretum of Villa Angiolina, magnolias and oaks may whisper the same words they once murmured to Franz Joseph I.

If you continue on to Villa Jeannette, you might almost hear the notes of the Fourth Symphony by Gustav Mahler, parts of which he composed right here while recovering from surgery. Should this spark your curiosity to experience Opatija’s past firsthand, the Opatija Time Travel program is the perfect choice.

A Walk Through Opatija’s History

You sit on a bench, watching the crimson sunset along the Lungomare promenade. Suddenly, Isadora Duncan takes your arm and invites you for a stroll to Villa Amalia.
“Do you notice how the palm leaves tremble in the breeze?” she asks. It was these very palms of Opatija that inspired her signature shoulder movement—one that changed the course of dance history.
You can hear stories like these every Wednesday on a costumed walk, guided by some of the most remarkable figures who shaped Opatija.

Opatija from a Fisherman’s Boat

If you’d rather see Opatija through the eyes of its people, set sail. There is no better perspective than that of a local fisherman, who knows the secrets of every cove and rock.
Every Friday, a traditional wooden boat—a gajeta—departs from the Opatija harbor. The skilled boatman offers his hand as you step aboard and drift into the sunset. With a glass of local wine, you listen to charming fishing tales and admire Opatija from a whole new angle. If you wish, you can even capture the moment with a Polaroid photograph.

Klapa Concert in Angiolina Park

It’s Monday evening. Waves lap gently against the shore, and the laughter of the last swimmers still lingers in the air. Suddenly, a soft melody fills the space.
Follow the sound to Angiolina Park, where voices and guitars blend in perfect harmony. Welcome to a klapa concert—its warm, layered tones carrying you on a deeply emotional journey through Opatija.

Traditional Dances on Thursdays

If klapa music awakens your curiosity for local traditions, Thursday evenings bring them vividly to life. The clinking of coins sewn onto costumes, colorful skirts swirling with graceful steps, melodies echoing stories of fishermen and farmers.
Who better to guide you into Opatija’s rich Liburnian past than Zora Folk Ensemble - one of Croatia’s most renowned folklore groups, with over 70 years of tradition?

Vintage Car Exhibition

Inspired by the rhythms of dance and tradition, you may find yourself wondering how people once moved through the decades. Tuesday’s vintage car exhibition offers the perfect answer.
Polished chrome and vibrant bodies of classic automobiles invite you to imagine yourself in another era—gloved hands on the wheel, a silk scarf fluttering, driving through a bygone yet equally enchanting Opatija.
At every turn in Opatija, echoes of its rich past can be heard. And when you feel ready to step even deeper—closer to the way its people once lived and experienced it—the Opatija Time Travel awaits, ready to take you on a truly unforgettable journey through time.
